This narrative should consist of aclear and thoughtful analysis of how each work sample reveals your strengthsand areas for improvement, according to each of the seven areas addressed inthe program outcomes/competencies. Makesure you also address how you intend to strengthen your competencies in allareas as you graduate onto the next step of your professional career. On whichareas will you focus most and why?

These outcomes are listed below,along with the assignments that could be included to demonstrate mastery of theoutcome:

  • Cognitive abilities (criticalthinking and information literacy): Assignments or projects thatdemonstrate problem solving, analysis, synthesis, appropriate use ofinformation resources, etc.
  • Research skills: Acopy of a research proposal, a survey developed, etc.
  • Communication skills (writtenand oral): A topic paper, presentation outline, or PowerPoint thatdemonstrates your written and oral communication skills.
  • Ethics & Diversity awareness: Papers that demonstrate your understanding and/oranalysis of ethical and diversity issues in psychology.
  • Knowledge of foundations of the field: Assignments, papers, or projects that demonstrate yourunderstanding of basic concepts, theories, and empirical findings in oneor more of the domains of psychology, including biological, cognitive,developmental, personality, and social.
  • Knowledge of applied psychology: Assignments, papers, or projects from courses and/or aninternship that demonstrates your ability to apply psychology to personal,social, and/or organizational problems.
  • Interpersonal Effectiveness: PowerPoint presentations, videos of your presentationsthat demonstrate your ability to communicate effectively, appreciatediversity and cultural sensitivity and awareness of your impact on others.

These are my work samples:

  • Car Accidents Using Cell Phones

  • This sample applied critical andcreative thinking, skeptical inquiry, and a scientific approach to solveproblems related to behavior and the mental processes. It was able to sharemultiple perspectives on the subject of car accidents because of cell phoneoperation. It was also able to recognize the underlying assumptions, and judgedthe rationality of these justifications by comparing them to a range of varyinginterpretations and prospective. The article provided positive as well asnegative appraisal of the use of cell phones while operating a vehicle. It wasable to uncover and judge scientific evidence for psychological claims. Thetopic paper, presentation outline demonstrated written and oral communicationskills. It was able to demonstrate the understanding of basic concepts,theories, and empirical findings in one or more of the domains of psychology,including biological, cognitive, developmental, personality, and social. Thesample demonstrated the ability to apply psychology to personal, social, and/ororganizational problems. The sample recognized the essential elements of thecell phone problem, issue, or argument; however, some aspects of hypotheses orconclusions were confused or incorrect, details or nuances are missing orglossed over, multiple points of view were taken into account butcontradictions are not resolved.

  • Cultural Competence

  • Cultural competence describes theability of an individual or organization to interact effectively with people ofdifferent cultures, SHAMAHA, (2014). Culture competency is often described asthe combination of a body of knowledge, a body of belief and a body ofbehavior.  It involves a set of congruentbehaviors, attitudes, and policies that come together in a system, agency, oramong professionals that enables effective work in cross-cultural situations.’Culture’ refers to integrated patterns of human behavior that include thelanguage, thoughts, communications, actions, customs, beliefs, values, andinstitutions of racial, ethnic, religious, or social groups,  OMH, (2013). This sample analyzed theimportance of effective communication skills in developing strong interpersonaland organizational relationships that are culturally sensitive and respectfulof diversity. The article provided a definition for cultural competence andprovided some examples of what it means to be culturally competent. Itidentified psychological principles and started to examine and analyzepersonal, social, and organizational issues, but was unable to integrate orgeneralize applications beyond the examples that were given.

  • Schedule 2 Drugs

  • Cocaine and adderall are both stimulants thatare classified as DEA schedule 2 drugs. Both drugs are potentially high forabuse, serious psychological problems, and physical addiction, DEA, (2014).Stimulants affect the central nervous system and those areas that areresponsible for movement and pleasure (the dopamine) in the brain. Stimulantsmake dopamine build up in the synapse (space between neurons) by stopping thesestimulants from being recycled. The built up of dopamine interferes with thenormal communication of the brain causing a euphoric feeling. If abusedconsistently stimulants can cause permanent alterations in the reward and othersystems in the brain. The more stimulants are abused; tolerance increases asthe user attempts to emulate their initial experience, but cannot. Stimulantabuse can cause constriction of veins and arteries, pupil dilation; overallescalation in body temperature, it can increase the heartbeat and causedangerously high blood pressure. Stimulants, when abused, can give the userheadaches and causes problems with indigestion (cramps, nausea, and stomachpain). The user often looses their appetite and as a result is underweight andmalnourished. Stimulants can render users vulnerable to fatal cardiac arrest,stroke, and cause an inability to breathe properly. As with any manner of drugabuse, abusers find themselves at HIV risk with unsafe behaviors. Inhalingstimulants may cause lesions in the nasal cavity, an inability to smell things,sore throat, and other chronic nasal problems. Stimulants with other drugs suchas alcohol or depressants can cause many different kinds of severe problems,NIH, (2013). This sample found and evaluated scientific evidence forpsychological claims. It explains majorconcepts, theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, and historical trendsin psychology. It applied psychological principles to examine and analyzepersonal, social, and organizational issues.

  • Behaviorism

  • Behaviorism is also referred to asbehavioral psychology. It is a theory of learning that implies that allbehaviors are obtained through conditioning. Conditioning is enhanced byinteractions with the environment. Behaviorists deduced that our behaviors aremolded by our responses to environmental stimuli. Popular behaviorists includedPavlov, Watson, and Skinner. This sample was able to explain major concepts,theoretical perspectives, empirical findings, and historical trends inpsychology. It examined and compared theories by three psychologists, Pavlov,Watson, and Skinner, in their contributions to psychology.
