Peak et al (2010) point out that“One of the primary responsibilities of a supervisor is to back officers oncalls, especially priority one calls. In doing so, the supervisor performsseveral functions. First, safety is enhanced, especially if a situation getsout of hand” (pg. 319). The Sergeant is there for the officer’s benefit (good/bad),steering the officer away from turmoil, making sure no rules are or have bebroken. The sergeant is an extension of the handbook, the verbal version. Thesupervisor does just that, Supervise, making sure the officer is doing theirjob at the scene.
