The estimated totalnumber of guns (both licit and illicit) held by civilians in the United Statesis 270,000,000 to 310,000,000 (William,2012).

There were manylandmark cases such as Columbia v. Heller (2008) The Court ruled that theSecond Amendment to the U.S. Constitution confers an individual right topossess a firearm for traditionally lawful purposes such as self-defense. Italso ruled that two District of Columbia provisions, one that banned handgunsand one that required lawful firearms in the home to be disassembled ortrigger-locked, violate this right (Second Amendment, 2014). McDonald v.Chicago (2010) was another landmark case. A supreme court case that decided ifthe second amendment did protect a individual and their right to keep and beararms.

The second amendment states “Awell regulated militia, being necessary to the security of a free state, theright of the people to keep and bear arms, shall not be infringed” (Peak,Gaines, & Glensor, 2010, p. 352).

The United States is also the leading supplierof conventional arms to the developing world; more than 300 U.S. companiesproduce arms and/or ammunition, and more than 4 million firearms aremanufactured annually for domestic sale or export (Reuters, 2007).Nearly a half million victims of violent crimes each year state that they facedan offender with a firearm, and about two-thirds of the murders committed eachyear involve the use of firearms (U.S. Department of Justice, Bureau of JusticeStatistics, 2007b.Thestate that has the toughest gun law is our nations capitol Washington D.C. Thislaw made it illegal for citizens to own buy or even sell a handgun.

Owning a gun has becomecommon in the modern society.  Officersand civilians can own and use the guns for different purposes. Half a centuryago, not many people who owned guns and those who owned were to follow stricterrules and regulations guiding on how to handle them in different situation. There has been worry of gun ownershipdue to the increase of juvenile homicide offences. The number of homicides involving guns hasincreased over the

Homicides involving guns ison increases over the ages. The number of juvenile arrest for the violation ofguns surpasses beyond a hundred percent. As the weapon of choice, gun hasincreased homicide thus making it a deadly situation among those who owns guns.

However, there are much ofunreported and uninvestigated cases of juvenile violence incidences thus makingit hard to tell the exact number of cases involving the use of gun. It alsomakes it hard to understand the causes of such violence and the factors thatgeared to such deadly acts. The role of the guns in the juvenile homicides ishowever being more evident and may increase to some unprecedented levels, whichmight make it to go out of control (Carter, 2012).

The gun ownership has becomeuncontrollable in some cases such as allowing the teenagers to handle theweapon. This has led to increase in gunshot injuries and fatalities among theyoung men. The gunshots are either accidentally or under the influence of drugsor depression. These continue to increase the death to exceed the ones bynatural causes.

The police officers togetherwith other community organizations should educate and advocate for better handlingof the guns, provide information on usage of the guns as well as use communityrelations to reduce its deadliness. Police chiefs have been using these tacticsas well as recommending tough laws to prevent the issue.
